August 2008

Elderville 7K

I do apologize for the delay in results and updating...I am training for my next Tri coming up on Sept 13th, Zach is starting Kindergarten on the 25th, and we took a vacation last week!! I also have not received the results from Ken yet, but will get those tomorrow from fellow club member Sandy Maddox...anyways..

Can you say HOT!! I think it was 100 degrees with 100% humidity!! We had a great turn out of about 40 runners with lots of great food post race!!! Thanks for the "old timer" knives and road runner pins!! Ken and Hammer did a wonderful job!! We appreciate all you do!!

The record for the men's race did fall to a surprise guest who was in from Tennesse for a wedding.  Wim Codington ran a smoking 24:26 on the 7K course.  Larry Dillon was the first club member to cross the finish with a time of 29:09.  Harold Wilson looks like he is on track to break the 70AG Texas Half Marathon Record.  He finished 9th OA with a time of 32:40.  We wish him the best as he prepares to break the record in Jan. at the Houston Half Marathon.  Many might be asking what is up with Paul Bruce Hill coming in last....well he is training for his New Mexico Marathon coming up next month in Sept!! We wish him much luck!!!

I am glad to report I survived another 1/2 mile open water Triathlon swim...but i did manage to hit a cedar tree while riding my tri bike the other day!!! Hint....don't look down when you hear something rubbing!!!

Many Club Memebers competed in the River Cities Triathlon in Shreveport on August 3rd....we had a couple of top AG finishers...William Ritter, David Townsend and Papa John.  Hammer, Tammy Rooney, Dona Thomas, Bonny Beebe, Paula Lopez, and myself were just a few that competed with the other 1300 that were there.

Well I hope to see you all the the Club Picnic on September 6th at Turkey Creek!!! Bring your favorite dish and lawnchair!!

 July 2008

Sansom Farm 5K

Boy it was a good day in the town of Gilmer, TX, when 45 runners showed up to test their running abilty on the hilly backroads of Uphur County... The best parts were being able to take a post-run dip into the pool and then eat a variety of wonderful food!

I would like to thank the Sansom's for opening up their home and putting on  first class run!!

I am already looking forward to next year!!!

Look at the Results Page for full times and places!!!

Great Job to OA winners Larry Dillon & Leslie Stelpflug....

I was determined that those hills were not going to take me down this year!!!

I know many have asked where is William??? Well William has developed an interest in Triathlon's.  He was last spotted in Dallas doing the Olympic Distance Disco Tri....he took first in his AG!!! Bonny Beebe also did the Sprint Disco Tri with a 3rd AG finish!!!  Way to GO!!!

Many of us attended the Jefferson Heritage Tri this past weekend also!!

David Townsend 3rd in the Master's, Papa John 1st AG, Eric Dellar 2nd OA!!, Myself 2nd AG, Paula Lopez, Hammer, Tammy Rooney, Sarah Dellar did the relay...Everyone Did a Wonderful Job!!!

Stay Tuned for the River Cities Tri coming up on August 3rd!!

Exciting news !!! Marathon & Half marathon training group coming to Longview!! If anyone is interested in being a coach please contact Shelly Bassett at shelly.bassett@earthlink.net

they do pay $500 to the coaches!!!

www.usafitlongview.com for details!!

Last but not least....DO WE WANT TO DO

THE LONGVIEW CLASSIC HALF MARATHON??

The course would use some of the old original classic route.  Start point would be a little different...probably on the Loop in Kilgore instead of Downtown...finish point?? We need sponsors?? Food, goodie bag items, door prizes, raffle items, t-shirts, volunteers...it takes alot to get this organized!! LET ME KNOW WHAT YOU ALL WANT TO DO!!!
lm1js@aol.com

if we don't want to do a big production, then maybe we can do a little low-key half marathon for those training in the usafitlongview training program...

Next month's club run is in my neck of the woods!! Elderville!!! Remember the course is 4.35 miles and start time is 7am because of the hotter weather!!! Everyone bring a friend!!

keep running,

Leslie

Alley Fest 2008

Can anyone say HOT!!! Boy I could of thought of a million places I would have rather been than running!!! I guess one can tell that by the horrible time I ran!! I will try to redeem myself at the Juneteenth Run coming up on June 14th!!!  Anyways it was good to see all the club members at this year's Alley Fest!!! I think everyone did a fantastic job on representing our club!!! I have the results if anyone wants their times!!  All club members will get one point for attending!!

I have not had much feedback on starting some weekly group runs...I did hear thru the grapevine that the Marshall runners have started up a group run during the week...I will be getting some more info on that and post it in the workout section....If anyone wants to lead a workout group just let me know...!!!!!!

Membership is almost straight!! Sorry it has taken me so long!! I apologize for any inconviences!!!

It was good to see Candice Cox and Eyvonne Carter in from Austin...Matt came in from Ft Worth...Also Leo was unable to run due to having ingrown toe nails surgically removed from both big toes!!!  It was also good to see Bob Kipp made his trip to San Diego & back safely...he reported having a great time driving his corvette down to the San Diego Marathon running a 4:10 a little off his goal of 4 hrs....We wish David Townsend a safe trip with his family to Florida on vacation...Paul & Molly  Hill had a family reunion to attend this Alley Fest weekend...Jim Eitel was in Austin ...Eloise & Kerry were in New Orleans...

Well anyone looking for a good 5K to keep in shape this summer..we will be having our next club run July 12th at Steve Sansom's home in Gilmer!!!  Remember to bring some extra clothes for that post-run dip into the pool!!!

Till then Happy Running!!!

I also wanted to thank everyone for being patient as we are revising membership. Currently we are updating info and creating a new database. Hopefully we will have the database up and running next month. We will also start utilizing the internet to send out monthly club run reminders and send out emails or postcards (to those who do not do internet) to remind us when dues are due. DUES ARE NOW good for one year!!! If you pay in May 2008, then your dues will be due May 2009!!!!

Other changes are I am trying to come up with a new member packet. So when you join the club you get a packet of goodies…such as coupons, running journal, pen, etc… Also in the process of trying to start a quarterly newsletter to be sent out via internet or mail (to those who do not do internet)…Hopefully the first edition of the newsletter will be sent out later this summer….These are both in the beginning phases so please feel free to let me know what you think about these ideas. Also if you have anything you want to donate to the goodie bags let me know!!! Lm1js@aol.com I also wanted to create some group runs during the month…such as some track runs, long runs, hill repeats etc…if anyone is interested in getting together for training runs throughout the month please email me!! I always get emails from people who are training for various events…I would like to start doing more for those who are interested in group training sessions…

Also WELCOME to all the new club members!!!! We have had several new members join the past couple of months…Heather Huffman, Ken Davis, Kerry Pringle, Matthew Korzeniewski, Zachary Hicks, Paula Lopez !!!! If I missed anyone...sorry :(!!

Townsend's 5K

I do not know where to start this month but I guess I will start with don't you just hate it when you miss your mark when you are running a race.  I have been doing so much of that lately I do not know what to do with myself except to push myself to the limits.  With that said, on the other hand, I would like a little of what Papa John, Steve Sansom, Rusty Ivey, and John Nedlo have been "smoking".  hahaha (check out their recent times!!)

For your info...Papa John goes to the Memphis Marathon with Debby and decides what the heck...he will go ahead and run the marathon.......he runs a 3:14!!!! Remeber John ran a 3:18 at a very HOT San Antonio Marathon in Nov....

We had several top AG finishers in the recent White Rock 1/2 Marathon...Rusty Ivey, John Nedlo(2nd AG), Steve Sansom (4th AG)...Derek Moore, Jennifer Olivares, David Goggin also completed the race.... (if you ran and I didn't mention you...sorry...please let me know & I will correct it!!)

The LRC also had a couple of members represent at the Shreveport Christmas run...good job Larry and Ken.

CLUB RUN Results

I first would like to thank the whole Townsend family for helping with the club run this month...and for those of you all who missed the race...you missed some great post race pancakes!!! You also missed a great course!! I would have to say it is one of my favorite courses!! Check out the club run pics on the photo page!!!!

Their were no surprises when former Prez William Ritter turned in a 17:53 first place finish.  Larry Dillon took 2nd with a time of 20:09.  Third went to Steve Sansom (21:23) and Derek Moore was 4th with a time of 21:52.  Fifth place went to 15 yr old Chase Anglin with a time of 22:32.  Sixth was myself with a time I do not want to discuss...  :)  Rounding out the top ten were 7th Jimmie Jones (22:40), 8th Harold Wilson (24:26), 9th Jennifer Olivares (24:34), and 10th Eugenie Holman (27:11).

"Cheetah" Update

Only 3 months AWAY!!!!

To date we only have 4 sponsors!!! We need everyone's help to get sponsors!!! Jo Samford & Suzanne Dailey have come forward to head the food committee.  Larry Dillon will assist with course marking.  Matt will go to press with the race pamphlets in Jan so we can get those distributed.  The race is March 1st!!! Papa John has gotten in touch with Raquet & Jog and they will donate a pair of shoes for door prizes...Remember all the proceeds will go to Norbert's children's education fund!!! Matt & I are going to meet after Christmas and try to get some sponsors..If anyone wants to join us let me know!!! For your info it will cost at least $1000.00 to put on this race!!! We need sponsors!!! Let's all get together and put on a race we can all be proud of!!

Well that is about all I know for now...Next club run will be the Hope Run in Marshall on January 5th.  It is for a good cause and I hope we can help raise some money to go to the orphans.  For more info you can go to www.portionfororphans.org

I would like to first thank Parke Way Fitness Center and Wal-Mart Supercenter on Estes Pkwy, without them the race would not have been possible.  I also would like to thank  David Townsend, Kari, my mom, and my husband for all their help during the race.

We had 58 participants and of those 34 were non-members!!!

First place finishers were Larry Dillon & Leo Ruiz with a time of 19:58 on the moderatly hilly course thru the beautiful WildWood subdivison.   The third finisher was Mike Kittner with a time of 20:32.  Next was 16 year old Pine Tree Cross Country runner, Grace Lindwall, finishing  first for the ladies with a time of 21:26.  I finished behind Grace with a time of 21:56.  Greg Jones was in from Dallas and finished 6th with a time of 22:29.  Candice Cox gave Paul Bruce Hill a run for the money by finishing 23:00 / 23:05.  Rounding out the top ten were Abigail Martinez (25:45) and Bonny Workman (25:57).

Jim Eitel's Tator Trot 10K & 2 miler

We had a spectacular turnout for this years Yamboree.  We had 38 runners in the 10K and 23 runners in the 2 mile.  Thanks Jim for the great race, thanks to Jennifer for bringing out her athletes, thanks to the finish line girls, and Steve & myself assisted Jim with the refreshements.

The winner of this years race was Rusty Ivey (40:57) who edged out Leo Ruiz at the finish.  I think Leo felt sorry for Rusty since he has been training so hard for the NYC Marathon set for Nov 4th.  This year's third place went to 14 year old Carlos Sanchez and 8th place went to 13 year old Brad Beckham (44:19) both of Gilmer.  What great athletes they are going to be!!! In the female division I (44:43) took the lead around mile 2 and was able to hold off 16 year old Robin Beckham (46:48)  who was being paced the last 4 miles by her devoted coach Jennifer Olivares.  Robin is also a great athlete!! Just want to say sorry to Paul Hill ...he was trying so hard to catch up to me but I edged him out by a mere 7 seconds...maybe next time Paul!!  :)

Update on the "Cheetah" Fun Run scheduled for March 1, 2008

I received an email from Norbert "Cheetah's" sister from Fort Worth and the whole family plans on participating in the race and they are very excited.  Matt and I will need some help from all club members!!  We need people to help get some sponsors and all we are asking for is a $100 donation or more.  The money profited will go to the Korzenewski childrens education fund.  I will pass out sponsor letters at the club run in November...I would like all sponsor information in no later than the club run in January.  We will also need some committees

1) refreshments  2)course set-up/clean-up 3)water stop  4)registration

5)door prizes/donations

Anyone interested in helping please let me know!!!!!! lm1js@aol.com

I also wanted to say congrats to Candice Cox who just ran in a marathon in Guatemala and finished under 4 hours and was the second over-all female... You go girl!!

I am also very excited to announce that Parke Way Fitness Center in Longview is going to allow us to use their facilities and help sponsor our November club run.  The race will start at Parke Way and head south down Bill Owens then head into the beautiful WildWood subdivision.   The race will be held on Saturday, November 10th at 800am sharp!!!  If you need directions to Parke Way let me know!!!  After we are done with our run I encourage you to go check out the great workout facility they have to offer!!

Anyways gotta go!!!! See you all soon!!!

September 2007

Bob Walker's Turkey Creek Farm 5.2 miler

The LRC year has offically come to an end and with that comes some major changes.  Matt Owings is now our Vice President and Leslie Stelpflug has stepped up to the President's position.  The club also lost a dear runner and friend this month in an tragic accident, Mr Norbert "Cheetah" Korzenewski.  In memory of our beloved friend we are planning on sponsoring the "Cheetah" 5K Fun Run in March of 2008 on the course Cheetah hosted at Spring Hill Middle School.  The money collected will be donated to the Korenewski Childrens Education Fund.  Ms Korenewski stated "we made her day" and was thrilled to find out about the race and will be present at the race.

As far as the running there was no surprises when William Ritter turned in a first place over-all male finish and ex-Pine Tree standout Candice Cox finished first for the females.  Despite the hot, humid weather and 7 am start, we had a good turnout of 35 runners.  It was great to see Dona Thomas back running with us in preparation for her Tri in Hawaii this month!!!  Just want to wish her luck as well as Matt O running the Detroit Marathon, Debby & Eyonne running in Chicago in Oct. and Rusty Ivey New York Marathon in Nov.

I want to also say congrats to runners of the year Leo Ruiz and Leslie Stelpflug.  Also to all the other award receipents.

Well all these people training makes me want to go for a run....so I'm off and hope to see everyone at the next club run in Gilmer on October 13th.  This is going to be a great year!!!!

Thanks, Leslie

Sansom’s Farm 5k

AUGUST 2007

The LRC year came to an end after the August club run at Steve Sansom’s Farm. Steve was a great host providing plenty of fruits, snacks, and a resort style pool to cool off from the summer heat. I will be honest and tell you it feels good to be running again instead of watching from the sidelines. I liked the cross country start and finish we had and the moderate course of hills. I didn’t feel too good the first half but was able to pick it up the second half of the run for a 17.49 5k.

Once the final points are tabulated I will be announcing the overall male, female, and age group winners for the club. The plaques will be passed out at the September club run I hope at Bob Walkers Turkey Creek Farm in Longview.

Since the rain has past us, the reality of summer has hit us with temperatures now over 100 degrees most days of the week. Be sure you stay hydrated, wear sunscreen, and run in the mornings or late evenings.

Next club run is September 8 th at 7AM at Bob Walker’s place out on Turkey Creek Farm. Look for directions on the home page in the next couple of days.

This will be my last month as your Longview Running Club President as I set sights on going to graduate school at UT Tyler in Clinical Exercise Physiology in dreams of working in cardiac rehab or human performance, or some other field that’s intriguing. I will also try to be maintaining a competitive running career as well as I will be setting sights on my first half marathon this fall. Thank you all for allowing me to serve as your president for the past year and a half. It has been fun, a challenge, and a blessing all at the same time. Thanks for the friendships I have developed with many of you it has been great. See ya’ll at the races!

HAPPY RUNNING!

Elderville 7

This past club run was a done on a day where everything is based on luck, because number 7 means luck to some people. Many go to the casinos or get married. Even the Tour de France started on July 7. The Elderville run was on July 7, 2007 and it started at 7 a.m, with your choice of a 7 mile or a 7 kilometer route. The weather we received on July 7th seemed to have brought luck too since it was raining for about two weeks straight.

The 7 mile run brought luck to female winner Judy Weeks and the male winner Leonardo Tovar. Weeks came in at 56 flat for 10th overall.

Tovar who has been dominating running around East Texas finished in 41.24, after starting slow half way at a 6.30 pace to finish strong in the end.

Leonardo Tovar (29) coming in first in the Elderville 7 mile run. Tover also finished 2nd in the Firecracker 5k in Shreveport earlier in the week.

Your President William Ritter is back to running since the horrendous stress fracture. This was my first club run to run since December; it felt good to be back running. I was about 5 seconds of Papa John’s 7k record on the course in 28.26. If I had known I was so close I would have ran harder the last mile. Brenda Smith was the first runners for the ladies in the 7k clocking in 41.48.

Brenda Smith (45) for 1st OA Female in the Elderville 7k on July 7th.

Hammer and Ken Roden did a great job conducting the run. I specially liked the prize, which was a jar of Elderberry Jelly by Smuckers. I tend to eat peanut butter jelly sandwiches on a daily basis so I can definitely put this Elderberry Jelly to use. When the results were made out Hammer and Ken had thanked the many ladies that had brought food. I thank you very much it was delicious. I ate a little more than I should have. Also for the EMS staff for letting us use the fire station. The people in there were very friendly. Also to the volunteers that helped make it a success and keeping us in the right direction.

This past month the club had two seniors representing themselves in the Senior Olympic Games. One was 74 year old Harold Wilson from Tyler who placed 3rd in the 10k road race in 49.16 and 3rd again in the 5k road race in 23.08. Many of you know 78 year old Fred Samford from Kilgore who placed 10th in the 5k road race in 29.03. These two men were both on the higher end of their age group competing against the youngsters. Next time you see them, be sure to congratulate them.

Also be sure to check out the July Spotlight of the month with Dr. Ken Roden. We have one more month left to collect the final points. It’s hard to say who will be runner of the year right now with Leo Ruiz and Leslie Stelpflug trading positions. The next club run will be August 11th at 8 a.m.at Steve Sansom’s house on the outskirts of Gilmer. After the run feel free to jump in the pool and cool off after a summer run.

Happy Running!

WILLIAM

February 2007

I apologize for the website for being down the past few weeks, we ran into some complications with our provider but we are back in business and that is the important thing. This month the “Freeze Your Fanny 5k” took the spot of the club run this month. It was a cold morning for running, but hopefully everybody got a good warm up in because it was 30 degrees. The funds went to the Special Olympics. It was great to see some of the faces I haven’t seen in awhile.  The T shirts were pretty cool too, except there was bicycle on it (for the cyclers).

Many of you may have wandering why I haven’t been running. Well after my first foot injury, I ran consistent for about 2-3 weeks then I another foot injury plagued me. I have what is known as metatarsal synovitis which in layman’s terms it is inflammation of my metatarsal joint in my right foot. I have no idea how much longer I will be out of running, but just keep me in your prayers.

While the marathon season is drawing to an end, some of the LRC members have been doing some marathoning. Our former president Matt Owings started marathoning again. Owings competed in the Mississippi Natches Marathon in Clinton, he finished in 4:52 which was his first marathon since 2003. At the end of February he will be running the Cowtown Marathon. Then there was the Chevron Houston Marathon which Leo Ruiz and Leslie Stepflug competed in. Leo was on a mission to break 3:30 but he learned the horrors of the marathon at mile 13 when he had cramps in his hamstrings and he finished in 4:44 respectively. Leslie is on cloud 9 and beat her PR from White Rock in 3:36.  While the marathon in Houston is going on there is also the half marathon in which I saw the American Record set by the Californian Ryan Hall who ran at Stanford. Hall dominated the half marathon as he finished in 59.43. He ran by himself for the most part as he finished 3 minutes ahead of 2nd, also Hall beat the old AR by a minute and twelve seconds.  Following shortly behind Hall was my good friend and LRC member Brock Babin as he ran a 78.16.

Two weeks later Babin would later compete in the ING Miami Marathon and he too would learn the horrors of the marathon.  He learned that anything and everything can go wrong. First of all he learned it rains a lot in Florida. The race began with 4 inches of rain. He also learned everything is hotter in Miami. The temperature was over 75 degrees during the race and this was around 6 AM.  Finally, he learned that “The Wall” isn’t necessarily at 20 miles, but that it can come a few miles before that.  Brock ran 37.07 at 10k and a 1:27at the half but struggled to finish in  4:12,  but he was off the course for 30 minutes as he tried to regain himself. Brock is looking forward to another attempt in Chicago in October.  If you have any results for me to post about send me an email a         The March Club Run will be held by our VP Leslie Stelpflug and Friends. It will be held March 3 at 8:00 A.M. The course will be a 4 mile route and it will be run on all paved roads. From Longview you will take Hwy 149 to Tatum (about 20 miles). When you get to Tatum you will come to a 4 way stop and you will take a right on Hwy 43 (towards Henderson). Go approx. 3-4 miles and you will see a sign and you will take County Road 2183 (it will be on the left). Go approx 1 mile and the road will Y and you will veer to the right and that is the entrance to the park. If anyone is at the booth tell them you are with the Longview Running Club (be sure to thank them) and we will be at the pavilion on the left just inside the park. Also be sure to send your membership dues in ASAP and mail them to the address on the application. Thank you!
